Source "Fujian Folk Herbs"

The source is the rhizomes and roots of the octagonal lotus in the Berberis family. In autumn and winter, excavate, wash the sediment, dry or use fresh.

The original form of perennial herb. The rhizome is recumbent, with thick roots. The stem is erect, about 20 to 40 cm high. There are 2 cauline leaves, growing close to the top of the stem; the stalk is about 14 cm long; the leaf is shield-shaped and subcircular, 20-30 cm in diameter, 5-9 lobed, lobes wide triangular-ovate, 3 ~5 cm, with fine teeth on leaf margins. Umbrella, born at the intersection of two leaves on the top of the stem, flowers 5-8, or more, drooping; sepals 6, oval, about 12 mm long; petals 6, dark red, arranged in 2 rounds, 3 oval outer rounds , Inner wheel 3 obovate; stamens 6, filaments flat, open; anthers and filaments as long or longer, introverted; style short, stigma shield-shaped, ovary upper. Berry round. Flowering in early summer.

The habitat segment grows in the dampness of deep mountains and dense forests. Distributed in the south, southwest and southeast of our country.

The rhizome is nodular, about 6-10 cm long, 0.7-1.5 cm in diameter, light yellow when fresh, and brown-black when dried; the surface is flat or slightly concave, with a few small pits on the top, and a ring on the bottom Pattern. There are many fibrous roots, up to 20 cm long, about 1 mm in diameter, hairy, light yellow when fresh, and brown when dried. Hard and brittle, easy to break. The rhizome is yellow-green in cross-section, horny; the root is yellow in cross-section, with a dot-like center pillar in the center. Smell and bitter.

Produced in Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou and other places.

Chemical composition The roots and rhizomes contain pobophyllotoxin, deoxy-podophyllotoxin, isopicropodophyllone, hyperin, etc.

It is bitter in nature and taste, flat and toxic.

① Treatment of swelling and poisoning at the beginning: add brown sugar or distiller's grains of star anise lotus, mash it and apply it twice a day. ("Fujian Folk Herbs")

② Treatment of boils: two coins of octagonal lotus, steamed with wine; and mashed the affected area with fibrous roots. ("Guiyang Folk Herbs")

③ Treatment of scrofula: one to two octagonal lotus, two to two yellow wine. Add water and decoct. ("Fujian Folk Herbs")

④ Treatment of herpes zoster: grind the roots of star anise lotus and apply vinegar to the affected area. ("Guangxi Chinese Herbal Medicine")

⑤ Treatment of single and double moth sore throat: octagonal lotus one dollar, grinding juice and swallowing. ("Guangxi History of Chinese Medicine")

⑥ Treatment of bruises: one to three dollars of octagonal lotus root, grind the fines, and drink with wine, twice a day. ("Jiangxi Herbal Medicine")

⑦Treatment of poisonous snake bites: ∠Three to five coins of octagonal lotus, smashed, mixed with wine, and scum around the wound. Remarks The same genus Sichuan octagonal lotus is distributed in Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou. Its rhizome is used as medicine in Guizhou area and has the same effect as octagonal lotus.
