Source: This product is the dried rhizome of Polygonatum kingianum Coll.et Hemsl., Polygonatum sibiricum Red. or Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua of the lily family. According to different shapes, they are called "Rhubarb Extract", "Chicken Head Polygonatum" and "Ginger-shaped Polygonatum". Excavate in spring and autumn, remove the fibrous roots, wash them, and blanch them in boiling water or steam them until they are dry.

Traits Rhubarb: It is a thick, fleshy nodular mass, the nodules can be more than 10cm long, 3-6cm wide, and 2-3cm thick. The surface is light yellow to yellowish brown, with links, wrinkles and root marks. The stem marks on the upper side of the nodules are disc-shaped, with a concave circumference and a prominent middle. The texture is hard and tough, not easy to break, the section is cutin, light yellow to yellowish brown. It has a slight air, sweet taste and sticky chewing.

Chicken Head Polygonatum: Nodular curved column shape, 3-10cm long, 0.5-1.5cm diameter. The nodules are 2 to 4 cm long, slightly conical, and often branched; the surface is yellow-white or gray-yellow, translucent, with longitudinal wrinkles, and the stem marks are round, with a diameter of 5 to 8 mm.

Ginger-shaped Polygonatum: It is in the shape of long nodules, varying in length, and connected by a constant number of nodules. The surface is gray-yellow or yellow-brown, rough, with prominent disc-shaped stem marks on the upper side of the nodules, with a diameter of 0.8 to 1.5 cm.

Those with bitter taste cannot be used medicinally.

Identify the cross section of this product: Rhubarb has a thicker outer wall of epidermal cells. There are a large number of large mucous cells scattered among the parenchyma, containing calcium oxalate needle crystal bundles. Vascular bundles are scattered, mostly Zhoumu type.

The vascular bundles of chicken head polygonatum and turmeric polygonatum are mostly external tough.

Processed Polygonatum: remove impurities, wash, slightly moisten, cut into thick slices, and dry.

Wine Polygonatum: Take the pure Polygonatum, stew or steam it thoroughly according to the wine stewing method or the wine steaming method (Appendix II D), let it dry, cut into thick slices, and dry. For every 100kg of Polygonatum, 20kg of rice wine is used.

Nature and flavor: sweet, flat.

Return meridian: return to the spleen, lung and kidney meridians.

Functions and indications: invigorating qi and nourishing yin, invigorating the spleen, moisturizing the lung, and replenishing the kidney. Used for weak spleen and stomach, fatigue, dry mouth, lack of food, lung deficiency, dryness and cough, insufficient essence and blood, internal heat to reduce thirst.

Usage: The dosage is 9-15g.
