Source: This product is the dried rhizome of Smilax glabra Roxb. Excavate in summer and autumn, remove the fibrous roots, wash and dry; or cut into thin slices while fresh and dry.

Characters: This product is slightly cylindrical, slightly flat or irregular, with nodular swelling, with short branches, 5-22cm long, 2-5cm diameter. The surface is yellow-brown or gray-brown, uneven, with hard fibrous root residues, round bud marks on the top of the branches, irregular cracks in the outer skin, and residual scales and leaves. Hard quality. The slices are oblong or irregular, 1～5mm thick, with irregular edges; the cut surface is white to light reddish brown, powdery, with punctate vascular bundles and many small bright spots; the texture is slightly tough, and there is dust flying when broken. It has a sticky feeling after being wet with water. Odorless, slightly sweet and astringent.

Identify the powder of this product is light brown. There are many starch grains, single-grain like spherical, polygonal or square-like, diameter 8～48μm, umbilical point crack-like, star-like, trifurcated or dot-like, large grains can be seen with stratification; multiple grains are composed of 2 to 4 granules. Calcium oxalate needle crystal bundles exist in or scattered in mucous cells. The needle crystals are 40-144μm long and about 5μm in diameter. Stone cells are oval, square or triangular, with a diameter of 25-128μm, with fine pores and grooves; there are also dark brown stone cells, long strips, with a diameter of about 50μm, with extremely thick walls on three sides and thin on one side. The fibers are bundled or scattered, with a diameter of 22 to 67 μm. Marginal pits ducts and tracheids are more common, and most of the bordered pits extend into a ladder shape.

Process to remove impurities; if not sliced, soak, wash, moisturize, cut into thin slices, and dry.

Nature and flavor: sweet, light, flat.

Return meridian: return liver and stomach meridian.

Functions and indications: dehumidification, detoxification, tonic joints. Used for damp-heat drenching turbidity, entrapment, carbuncle, scrofula, scabies, syphilis and mercury poisoning caused by limbs, muscles and bones pain.

Usage and dosage: 15～60g.

Storage: Store in a ventilated and dry place.
