Source: This product is the dried root of Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels, a plant in the Umbelliferae family. Excavate at the end of autumn to remove the roots and silt. After the water evaporates, they are bundled into small bundles, put on the shed, and slowly smoked dry with fireworks.

Properties: This product is slightly cylindrical, with 3 to 5 roots or more in the lower part, and 15 to 25 cm long. The surface is yellowish brown to brown, with vertical wrinkles and horizontally long lenticels. Root head (guitou) diameter 1.5~4cm, with ring pattern, blunt upper end, purple or yellow-green stem and leaf sheath residue; taproot (guishen) surface is uneven; branch root (guitail) diameter 0.3~ 1cm, thick at the top, thin at the bottom, twisted, with a few root marks. The texture is flexible, the section is yellow-white or light yellow-brown, the skin is thick, there are cracks and most of the brown punctate secretory cavity, the wood is lighter, and the cambium ring is yellow-brown. It has a strong aroma, sweet, pungent, and slightly bitter.

Those with big firewood, dry and oil-free, or green-brown cross-section are not suitable for medicinal use.

Identification: Cross section of this product: The cork layer is a series of cells. The cortex is narrow with a few oil chambers. The phloem is broad, multiple fissures, round oil chambers and tubing, 25-160μm in diameter, larger on the outside, and smaller inwards, with 6-9 secreting cells around it. The cambium forms a ring. The rays of the xylem are 3 to 5 rows of cells; the vessels are scattered individually or 2 to 3 together, arranged in a radial pattern; the parenchyma cells contain starch grains. The powder is yellowish brown. The phloem parenchyma cells are spindle-shaped, with slightly thicker walls, with very fine diagonal interlaced textures on the surface, and sometimes thin diaphragms are visible. Trapezoid and reticulated ducts are more common, with a diameter of about 80μm. Sometimes fragments of the oil chamber can be seen.

Processed Angelica: remove impurities, wash, moisturize, cut into thin slices, sun-dried or low-temperature drying.

Chinese angelica: take the pure angelica slices and stir-fry according to the wine broiling method (Appendix II D). This product is round or irregular thin slices, with light brown ring patterns on the cut surface, flexible, dark yellow, and slightly focal spots. The taste is sweet, slightly bitter, and the aroma is strong, with a wine aroma.
