Source: This product is the dried rhizomes of Cimicifuga heracleifolia Kom., Cimicifuga dahurica (Turcz.) Maxim. or Cimicifuga foetida L. in the Ranunculaceae family. Excavate in autumn, remove the sand and sun until the fibrous roots are dry, sing or remove the fibrous roots and sun dry.

Characters: This product is irregular long block, multi-branched, nodular, 10-20cm long and 2-4cm in diameter. The surface is dark brown or brown, rough and uneven, with hard fine roots remaining, there are several round hollow stem base marks on the top, and the inner wall of the hole shows net-like grooves; the bottom is uneven, with fibrous root marks. Light in body, hard in quality, not easy to break, uneven in section, fibrous, yellowish green or yellowish white. Slight smell, slightly bitter and astringent taste.

Identification: Take 3g of this product powder, add 50ml of 1% sodium bicarbonate solution, place overnight, sonicate for 10 minutes, filter, and adjust the pH of the filtrate to 2～3 with dilute hydrochloric acid, and extract 3 times with ether (20ml, 15ml, 15ml), combine the ether solution, evaporate to dryness, add 1ml methanol to the residue to dissolve it, as the test solution. Take another ferulic acid reference substance, add methanol to make a solution containing 1mg per 1ml, as a control solution. According to the test of thin layer chromatography (Appendix VI B), draw 5μl of each of the above two solutions and place them on the same thin-layer plate of silica gel G with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as a binder. Use benzene-ethyl acetate- Formic acid (4:1:0.1) is the developing agent, unfold, take out, dry, and spray a newly prepared mixed solution of 1% ferric chloride and 1% potassium ferricyanide (1:1). In the chromatogram of the test substance, spots of the same color appear on the position corresponding to the chromatogram of the reference substance.

Process to remove impurities, slightly soak, wash, moisturize, cut into thick slices, and dry.

Nature and flavor: pungent, slightly sweet, slightly cold.

Return meridian: Return to lung, spleen, stomach, large intestine meridian.

Functions and indications: To release rash, clear heat and detoxify, promote Yang Qi. It is used for wind-heat headache, toothache, mouth sore, throat swelling and pain, measles, impervious measles, yang toxin spot; prolapse of anus, uterine prolapse.

Usage: The dosage is 3-9g.

Storage: Store in a ventilated and dry place.

Remarks:
(1) This product is weak in publication, and is rarely used for general symptoms. Because of its hair-transmitting effect, it is mostly used for measles for poorly transmitted measles. It is often used in conjunction with Pueraria lobata. This product can clear away heat and detoxify to treat swollen gums, sore mouth and tongue, and throat swelling and pain caused by hyperactive stomach. It is often clinically compatible with gypsum and coptis. It is effective for high fever, body rash, sore swelling and pain, and cohosh. It can be used with Yinhua, Lianqiao, Red Peony, and Angelica. The role of cohosh in raising Yang Qi is similar to that of Bupleurum, so the two medicines are often used in conjunction with each other, and more Qi medicines such as Codonopsis and Huangqi are used to raise the sun.

(2) Cimicifuga, a medicine, mainly has the effects of lifting hair through and clearing away heat and detoxification. Its function of lifting hair-lifting is similar to that of Bupleurum and Pueraria lobata, but it is more powerful. Combination of Bupleurum is used for lifting, and Pueraria lobata is used for rash. As for its good heat-clearing and detoxifying effects, this is its characteristic. It can be used with Coptis and Gypsum to treat stomach fire and toothache, and with Scutellaria baicalensis, Forsythia, Burdock, Radix Isatidis, etc., it can treat erysipelas on the head and face.
