Aliases: Phellodendron amurense, Yuanbai, Barberry

Source: This product is the dry bark of Phellodendron chinense Schneid. or Phellodendron amurense Rupr. The former is often called "Chuan Huang Bai" and the latter is called "Guan Huang Bai". After peeling the bark, remove the rough bark and dry.

Traits Phellodendron amurense: It is slab-shaped or shallow groove-shaped, with different length and width, and thickness of 3-6mm. The outer surface is yellow-brown or yellow-brown, flat or with longitudinal grooves, and some visible lenticels and remaining gray-brown coarse leather. The inner surface is dark yellow or light brown, with fine vertical ribs. Light in body, hard in quality, fibrous in cross-section, lobed and layered, dark yellow. It has a slight smell, a bitter taste, and stickiness when chewing.

Guan Cork: 2～4mm thick. The outer surface is yellow-green or light brown-yellow, relatively flat, with irregular longitudinal cracks, small and rare lenticels, and occasional grayish white rough skin remains. The inner surface is yellow or yellow-brown. Light body, harder, bright yellow or yellow-green in section.

Identification:
(1) The powder of this product is green-yellow or yellow. The fibers are bright yellow, 16-38μm in diameter, and often form bundles. The surrounding cells contain calcium oxalate square crystals to form crystal fibers; the crystal-bearing cell walls are woody and thickened. The stone cells are bright yellow, round or spindle-shaped, 35-128 μm in diameter, and some are branched, with sharp ends, thick walls, and obvious layer patterns. The diameter of the square crystals of calcium oxalate is about 24μm.

(2) Take 1g of this product's powder, add 10ml of ether, shake, filter, evaporate the filtrate, add 1ml of glacial acetic acid to the residue to dissolve, add 1 drop of sulfuric acid, leave it to stand, the solution is purple-brown.

(3) Take 0.1g of the powder of this product, add 5ml of methanol, heat to reflux for 15 minutes, filter, and add methanol to the filtrate to 5ml as the test solution. Separately take 0.1g of Phellodendron chinense reference medicinal material and prepare a reference medicinal material solution in the same way. Then take the berberine hydrochloride reference substance, add methanol to make a solution containing 0.5mg per 1ml, as the reference substance solution. According to the test of thin layer chromatography (Appendix VI B), draw 1μl of each of the above three solutions, and spot them on the same silica gel G thin-layer plate, and use benzene-ethyl acetate-isopropanol-methanol-concentrated ammonia test solution (6 :3:1.5:1.5:0.5) is a developing agent, put it in a developing tank saturated with ammonia vapor, unfold, take it out, dry it, and inspect it under a UV lamp (365nm). In the chromatogram of the test substance, a fluorescent spot of the same color appears on the position corresponding to the chromatogram of the control medicinal material, and a yellow fluorescent spot is shown on the position corresponding to the chromatogram of the reference substance.

Processed cork: remove impurities, spray with water, moisten thoroughly, shred, and dry.

Salted cork: Take the cork shreds and stir-fry according to the salt water method (Appendix II D).

Phellodendron charcoal: Take phellodendron shreds and fry according to the charcoal method (Appendix II D) until the surface is burnt black.

Nature and flavor: bitter, cold.

Return meridian: return to kidney and bladder meridian.

Functions and indications: clearing away heat and dampness, purging fire and steaming, detoxification and sore treatment. Used for damp-heat diarrhea, jaundice, entrapment, hot shower, athlete's foot, dysfunction {pi}, bone steaming and fatigue, night sweats, nocturnal emission, sore swelling, toxic eczema, itching. Salt cork nourishes yin and reduces fire. Used for yin deficiency and fire, night sweats and bone steaming.

Usage: dosage 3-12g; appropriate amount for external use.

Storage: Store in a ventilated and dry place, protected from moisture.

Remarks:
(1) The power of Phellodendron amurense to clear away heat and dampness is similar to that of Scutellaria and Coptis, but it is better to remove the damp and heat of coke. It can cure diarrhea combined with Scutellaria baicalensis and Coptidis; cure jaundice combined with gardenia and cypress; such as with atractylodes and achyranthes bidentata, can be used for foot and knee swelling and pain, lower limbs weak and weak, with anemarrhena, virginia, bamboo leaves, wood tongs, can be used It is astringent and painful when urinating; it can be used with Angelica dahurica and Gentian to bring down swelling. It can be used to treat damp-heat sores and eczema. It can be taken internally or externally; it can be used with medicines such as scutellaria baicalensis and gardenia for internal use, and powdered rhubarb and talc can be used for external use. To clear deficiency heat to treat hot flashes and bone steam, to purify kidney fire to treat nocturnal emission, it is often used together with Zhimu and Dihuang.
