The source is the fruit of Tribulus terrestris L., a plant of the Tribulus family. When the fruits are mature in autumn, the whole plant is cut, dried, and the fruits are laid to remove impurities.

The original form is an annual creeping herb, multi-branched, and the whole plant is pilose. Pinnate compound leaves alternate or opposite; 5-7 pairs of lobules, oblong, 6-15mm long, 2-5mm wide, often oblique at the base, with stipules. Flowers solitary in leaf axils; sepals 5; petals 5, yellow, early fall; stamens 10, 5 long and 5 short; ovary upper, 5-loculed, stigma 5-lobed. Flowering from June to July, fruit from August to September.

Habitat divisions were born in fields, roadsides and riverside grasses. Produced everywhere. The main products are Henan, Hebei, Shandong, Anhui, Jiangsu, Sichuan, Shanxi and Shaanxi.

The character fruit consists of 5 lobes, arranged in a radial pattern, with a diameter of 7-12mm. It often splits into a single fruit petal, the fruit petal is axe-shaped, 3-6mm long; the back is yellow-green, raised, with longitudinal edges and many small spines, and has a pair of symmetrical long and short spines. Hard quality. Taste bitter and pungent.

The chemical composition contains: steroidal saponins, the saponins are diosgenin, ruscogenin, hecogenin, gitoogenin, etc., and tribulus terrestris glycosides ( tribuloside), kaempferol-3-rutinoside (kaempferol-3-rutinoside), astragalin, harmine, etc.

Nature and flavor: lukewarm, pungent and bitter in taste.
